Liposuction Literally Takes Fat Away

Liposuction

We all know that maintaining a healthy weight is crucial to well-being.  And looking good is an unparalleled boost to self-esteem.  Unfortunately, the traditional paths to weight loss—fad diets, rigorous exercises routines—may not be the most effective ways to cast off fat, particularly if it is concentrated in certain areas of the body.  Liposuction offers an alternative to repeated unsuccessful attempts to tone down.

What is Liposuction?

Used to describe a family of procedures, Liposuction (also referred to as “Lipoplasty”) is the process of breaking up fat cells and removing them from the body.  Traditional Liposuction involves “sucking” fat cells out using a cannula, which is a narrow surgical tube.  A cannula is also used with more contemporary techniques such as Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL) and Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL), which use vibration and sound to dislodge fat cells.  Additionally, lasers may be used to liquify fat, making it easier to extract.  A surgeon may use a combination of techniques in order to best meet the patient’s particular needs.

What Does Liposuction Involve?

Most Liposuctions are performed in the ease and comfort of an outpatient setting.  General anesthesia is seldom required.   After determining that the patient is a good surgery candidate, the surgeon will mark targeted areas of the body, such as the belly, hips, thighs, or buttocks.  The patient is then given light sedation to relax them and a local anesthesia to avoid pain during the procedure.  Through a small injection, the cannula is inserted into the area to begin fat removal.  The surgery itself takes generally 1-2 hours, depending on the area(s) to be treated.

What happens after?

After the operation is over, the patient is free to go home, and, after a few days, can slowly return to normal activity under the surgeon’s supervision.  Pain medication may be prescribed for the first day or two following surgery if needed.  Some swelling after surgery is perfectly normal, but goes away quickly, at which point the patient may begin to see noticeable results. Upon full recovery, the patient will be advised to follow a diet and exercise program designed to keep the weight from returning.

Liposuction is a low-risk, convenient surgical technique that has been perfected over the past three decades.  It is performed on thousands of people every year under the care of skilled physicians and may be a good option for you.
