When Does Psoriasis Start and What Does it Look Like?

When Does Psoriasis Start and What Does it Look

Most diseases of the skin are not life-threatening.  Yet they can be painful and embarrassing—Psoriasis is a perfect example.

Psoriasis is a general term that applies to several types of dermatological conditions. In general, it refers to a discoloration of the skin that is itchy, scaly, or sore. It can affect all parts of the body. As an autoimmune disorder, it is not contagious, but it is a chronic condition and there is no cure.  However, there are treatments.

When Does Psoriasis Strike

Psoriasis can occur at any age.  Ordinarily, it develops in the late teen years or early 20s.   It may also appear in one’s 50s or 60s, a condition referred to as late onset psoriasis.  The causes of Psoriasis are attributed to a variety of factors, including heredity, diet, environment, or other medical conditions.   Psoriasis often goes in cycles of “flares” through a person’s lifetime; when it is not active, a patient is said to be in remission, a period which can potentially last for years.  There are many types of Psoriasis.

Types of Psoriasis

Plaque Psoriasis is the most common type. It appears as itchy, red blotches, usually on the knees, elbows, scalp, or trunk.

Guttate Psoriasis most commonly affects children and young adults and is bacterial, presenting as purple spots.

Inverse Psoriasis a fungal infection, appears as a rash in the groin or breast areas.  Pustular psoriasis looks like bumps, contains pus, and appears on the palms and feet.

Erythrodermic Psoriasis is a rare form which may cover all parts of the body; if left untreated, it may become a very serious health condition.

Psoriatic Arthritis causes swelling in the joints of the hands and feet.

Nail Psoriasis affects the color and texture of fingernails and toenails.

All Psoriasis is characterized by inflammation, swelling, discoloration, and pain.  It can be treated with various oral and topical medications, good hygiene, and sometimes by removing triggering foods or environmental factors.  Many Psoriasis sufferers find that embarrassment is the biggest problem, if the area affected cannot be hidden by clothing.  But too much scratching can lead to infection, so medical intervention is necessary to contain it—and to make life more pleasant.
